The hard work

His hands grip the bar. His head hangs down. But on the count of three, you can see his legs tense and start to push his body up.

For most of us, standing up is a simple process we do without thinking. For Deane, it is something he is having to relearn, to reteach his muscles to take his weight, to restrengthen the muscles so that they can push him up to a standing position.

It is incredibly hard work. After some stretches to maintain his flexibility, Deane’s daily physio consists of standing up, maintaing that position while the turner is pivoted and then sitting down, over and over again, as many times as he can. Everyday he is expected to do more than the day before.

I like to think I push myself when I work out but watching Deane is humbling. I’ve never worked as hard  Deane does everyday.

  2. I work in Deane’s conductive ed class at MOD and wanted to send him a big hug- you are working so hard Deane, and we can’t wait until you are back in class!

If there is anything I can do to help your family out as you are balancing everything, please don’t hesitate to send me an email and let me know- I mean it!

  3. I will not take things like standing, swallowing, coughing, for granted. I know that i was given many blessings by virtue of the body that iwas given. Deane reminds me everyday that i need to be appreciative. Just watching him answer yes to a question takes every muscle he has and all the breath he has to express himself, andhe gives us that gift. I continue to learn from my nephew.
