No rest

There is no resting on your laurels in the world of physio.

Last week Deane was weight bearing for the first time since his operation. A few days of pulling himself up on a turntable to aid in transferring and we’re moving on.

This week, it is assisted walking. Deane was able in the past to walk for short distances with someone balancing him from behind. He could go 20 to 30 metres at a time. As his hip got worse, this became more and more difficult. The difference in his leg length and his lean to the right meant that his gait became more of a hop with the majority of the weight bearing on the left leg.

Now he is up again. With a lift under his right leg, he has been up walking this week. His right leg is clearly still weak, but it is holding him. He hasn’t gone  far. Fifteen steps at the most. But, at this point, it’s the action, not the distance that matters.
